PRK Laser is the first generation of Laser Treatment. During this surgery no cut is made to the cornea. The epithelial tissue is scraped from the cornea to ensure the lasers are used directly on the cornea. Following the surgery a contact lens must be used for one or two days to protect the surface of the cornea.
This surgery can be completed without scraping the epithelial tissue in some cases with the laser just being applied through the tissue directly.
The advantages of this surgery are that it is low cost and it can be used on thinner corneas. There is no risk of increasing the intraocular pressure and no damage on the corneal nerves. Finally it also won’t cause any dry eye syndrome and there are no changes to the cornea biomechanics.
